Sundays Premier league fixtures featured the match of the weekend between reigning league Champions Manchester United and league runners-up Chelsea. Other fixtures for the night included Wigan Athletic v Fulham, West Ham United v Everton and Hull City v Stoke.
Chelsea v Manchester United (1-0)
An entertaining match at Stamford Bridge saw Chelsea eventually triumph 1-0 through a glancing shot from club captain John Terry off a Frank Lampard free-kick in the 76th minute. The match was a tense affair where Manchester United dominated possession, although it was Chelsea who had the better of the scoring opportunities, missing several clear-cut chances in and around the 6 yard box in both halves. Manchester United’s English striker Wayne Rooney went close a few times both sides of the interval but was ultimately left to rue his missed opportunities as Chelsea made it a club record 11 matches without defeat at The Bridge opening up a 5 point gap at the top of the table. Although the Arsenal team currently in second place have a game in-hand.
